Grabbed My Free Oracle Autonomous Database. Did You Get Yours?

Joel Kallman
SENIOR DIRECTOR, SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

At the recent Oracle OpenWorld Conference in San Francisco, Oracle announced the Oracle Cloud Free Tier.  I believe this is a watershed moment for Oracle, effectively removing all barriers from using Oracle Database.  There's no software to download, no Oracle software to setup, no mid-tier to configure, no certificate to install.  It's simply get up and go.  And it's all yours, and it's free.

This is a great example of the new Oracle.  Unlike Oracle of the past, where you may have been offered stripped down versions of Oracle technology, this version has it all, and it's ready to go, including:
And let's not forget - you get the power and functionality of the world's most popular database, the multi-model Oracle Database, on a world-class Exadata environment, running with Real Application Clusters.  Free.
What do you get for free?  Succinctly stated, a huge amount:
  • Databases:  Your choice of Autonomous Transaction Processing or Autonomous Data Warehouse. 2 databases total, each with 1 OCPU and 20 GB storage.
  • Compute:  2 virtual machines with 1/8 OCPU and 1 GB memory each.
  • Storage:  2 Block Volumes, 100 GB total. 10 GB Object Storage. 10 GB Archive Storage.
  • Additional Services:  Load Balancer, 1 instance, 10 Mbps bandwidth. Monitoring, 500 million ingestion data points, 1 billion retrieval data points. Notifications, 1 million delivery options per month, 1,000 emails sent per month. Outbound Data Transfer, 10 TB per month.
There has already been a wealth of great content published about how to get started with Oracle Cloud Free Tier:

What can you do with the free Autonomous Database?  Virtually anything.  You can experiment and prototype.  You can build and deploy and run applications.  You can even run applications "for real" - more than just mere prototyping.  Think social club, user group, meetup community, university project, startup business, or charity.  It is my personal hope that the IT community uses this great resource to fulfill the many needs of countless non-governmental organizations around the globe - help them solve a problem and share the solution, so others can gain from your effort.
Getting a free Oracle Autonomous Database is easy.  Can you get up and running in less than 5 minutes?  Absolutely!  I demonstrate starting from absolutely nothing to an Oracle Autonomous Database running in the Oracle Cloud, in roughly 4 minutes.  Oracle Database has never been this accessible or easy!
